On August 31, 2023, a Fuxing bullet train travels from Nanning City, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south China, to Guiyang City, the capital of the Guizhou province in the southwest.

The first full-scale high-speed rail service in south China’s karst areas began on Thursday morning when a Fuxing bullet train departed from Nanning City, the seat of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

According to China Railway Nanning Group Co., Ltd., the new railway connects Nanning with Guiyang City, the capital of the southwest province of Guizhou, across a distance of 482 kilometers.

It is the first railway of its kind to be built in Guizhou or Guangxi, both of which are noted for their karst environments. The region is rich of irregular sinkholes, underground streams, and caves, making it difficult to build railways.

The Guiyang-Nanning High-Speed Railway was built with the goal of enabling a top speed of 350 km/h, cutting the journey time from more than five hours to just under three hours. It will have a significant positive impact on locals in the mountainous regions and help the region’s economy thrive.

The new railway features 13 stations, with six of them on the Guizhou part and seven in the Guangxi segment.
